Amazing Photos of the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis) Over Aquila Private Game Reserve

In the early hours of the morning, Aquila was illuminated by the otherworldly glow of the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis), setting the sky ablaze with a mesmerising display of light and colour over the reserve. This extraordinary display was ignited by a historic G5 solar storm, which collided with Earth’s magnetic field on the night of Friday, May 10, 2024, and continued into Saturday, May 11, 2024. The Aurora Australis, a stunning and rare celestial phenomenon, captivated Cape Town, South Africa, and skywatchers around the world. Such geomagnetic storms are a rarity in the Southern Hemisphere, but on this occasion, it enchanted South Africans and international travellers fortunate enough to witness the event. Many of our safari guests were treated to the scene of striking red and orange rays illuminating the Karoo mountains as the Aurora Australis danced across the heavens, casting a spell over Aquila’s Big Five Private Game Reserve, akin to the iconic opening scene of Disney’s ‘The Lion King.’ The Southern Lights (Aurora Australis) The Southern Lights, also known as the Aurora Australis in the Southern Hemisphere, treated Southern Africa to a spectacular show on Friday night and Saturday morning when a G5 solar storm collided with Earth’s magnetic field, unleashing the magic of auroras—energetic particles from the Sun interacting with gases in the upper atmosphere. According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), who issued a solar storm warning for the category G5 event, this is the strongest geomagnetic storm to hit earth in approximately twenty years. Jon Ward, acting Executive Director at SANSA Space Science in Hermanus noted that this is the largest geomagnetic storm that has been observed in a very long time. “Although the likelihood of such a storm occurring is quite low, the severity of the impacts on technological systems can be very high. The energy and transport sectors are particularly vulnerable at the moment. “Space weather is a global phenomenon, the impacts are regional and vary greatly, depending on the time of arrival of the storm and whether the region is experiencing day or night.  In the week leading up to the storm, the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) Space Weather Centre issued several G4 warnings and, for the first time since 2003, one G5 warning was issued. And, if you’re wondering why everyone is abuzz with the news, the Geomagnetic Storm Scale indicates the severity of geomagnetic storms. It is denoted by a G followed by a number from 1 to 5, with 1 being a minor event, and 5 being an extreme event; making this G5 Geomagnetic storm a once-in-a-generation occurrence that is sure to go down as one of 2024’s top memories. But how and what causes the Aurora Australis to appear across our skies? Well, a geomagnetic storm occurs when charged particles from the Sun, caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME), interact with the Earth’s magnetic field. Besides the mesmerising display of light and colour, the impact of these storms is usually isolated to our technological systems, however, most people overlook any delays in signal or interferences with wifi connections as they are best known for creating the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) and Southern Lights (Aurora Australis). There were several reports of the Aurora Australis (also known as the Southern Lights) being visible over the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, among other parts of South Africa. Many Southern light sightings were reported, with incredible photos and videos of the Aurora Australis above Table Mountain, Gansbaai, Simons Town, and even at the very tip of Africa in Cape Agulhas, just to name a few. South Africans all over the country shared photographs of the Southern Lights as the Aurora Australis danced across the sky, all the way from Cape Town to Namibia

While the rest of the world shivers at the thought of the cold season, South Africa’s Western Cape enjoys pleasant sunshine and mild temperatures, perfect for exploring the region’s natural beauty. But that’s not the only reason to pack your bags. Here’s why Aquila Private Game Reserve and Spa should be at the top of your list for a winter safari experience. The Benefits of a Winter Safari Winter brings drier weather, meaning less foliage to obscure your view. This translates to exceptional game viewing opportunities. This increases your chances of witnessing fascinating animal behaviour without having to travel far or spend hours searching the expanse of the reserve. Winter is also a great time to enjoy Aquila’s buffet style restaurants. Expertly prepared by our chefs, steaming plates of traditional South African cuisine and international favourites await you. And, after an adventurous day out on safari, there’s nothing better than returning to your luxurious accommodations to relax by a crackling fireplace and enjoy a glass of wine from the renowned Cape winelands. During the spring months (September through to November), the landscape transforms into a kaleidoscope of shapes colours. Everything about this region is an experience one can only truly appreciate in person. The Karoo even has a different climate to that of Cape Town. The weather on winter days can be mild to warm, with cold nights. While the Summer (December to March) is usually hot and dry, often being many degrees higher than the city.  Th extraordinary richness of the Great Karoo is a testament to the region’s status as part of South Africa’s Succulent Karoo Biome, one of the world’s three biodiversity hotspots. Preserving the Historical Heritage of the Karoo The Great Karoo valley cradled by Aquila Game Reserve forms part of the Cape Fold Mountain Belt, with the two mountain ranges situated on either side, composed of erosion-resistant, quartzite sandstone belonging to the 510-million-year-old Table Mountain Group. Visiting Aquila is like taking a step back in time, with the presence of ancient fossils and Bushman paintings adding a layer of historical intrigue to the breathtaking wild and natural scenery. The reserve is committed to protecting the Western Cape’s natural landscapes and indigenous flora and fauna. Rare and endangered species, like the Cape Mountain Leopard, are specially adapted to the region’s harsh terrain. Protecting their habitat is vital for the survival of many endemic species.Despite challenges faced by urbanisation and wildlife poaching, Aquila’s conservation initiatives and community programmes are helping to preserve the Karoo’s cultural and wildlife heritage. Witnessing the Return of the Big 5 to the Western Cape Our team at Aquila Private Game Reserve take immense pride in their role in re-introducing the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) back to the Western Cape. Following the settling of the Cape, the province saw a horrific decline in their wildlife populations, resulting in the tragic extinction of the Cape Mountain Lion and the regional extinction of the Southern White Rhino and Black Rhino. However, Searl Derman (owner and founder), set about searching for the perfect place to reintroduce the Big 5 to the Cape. He was fortunate enough to find a nature reserve that would one day become the wildlife sanctuary and private game reserve we now know as Aquila. After an absence of almost 250 years, the reserve’s Animal Rescue team successfully introduced the first rhinos back into the Western Cape. Today, Aquila serves as a leading South African wildlife sanctuary and Cape Town Game Reserve, offering day visitors and overnight guests the chance to witness these iconic animals in their natural habitat. Aquila Private Game Reserve Celebrates 25 Years of Cape Town Safaris

In September 2024, Aquila celebrated 25 years of Cape Town safaris, marking the quarter-of-a-century anniversary of Aquila Private Game Reserve and Spa. What started as a vision and dream by Searl Derman back in 1999, has evolved into a globally recognised brand and leading name in wildlife conservation.  Over the past two and a half decades, Aquila has had the honour of hosting countless safari guests, ranging from everyday wildlife adventurers to international icons like Rihanna, Paris Hilton, and Mariah Carey. We’ve come a long way since 1999, and we’ve shared a glimpse of our humble safari lodge at the beginning — comparing the same location in 1999 to 2024 at Aquila Private Game Reserve and spa. Looking Back at 25 Years of Cape Town Safaris Aquila Private Game Reserve and Spa has become synonymous with Big Five Cape Town Safari Tours, offering a unique blend of luxury, conservation, and wildlife adventure close to the city. As we reflect on a quarter-century of conservation and service excellence, we’re reminded of the passion and dedication that has shaped Aquila into the iconic Cape Town safari destination it is today. Africa’s colonisation history saw a devastating impact on the Western Cape’s native flora and fauna. Human settlements, farming, and inhumane trophy hunting led to the extinction of the Cape Lion, as well as a concerning decline in native animal species across the region. However, over the years, Aquila’s tireless work has seen a remarkable impact on the recovery of native animal and plant populations, from the smallest of birds to the mightiest of elephants. Since Aquila Private Game Reserve was founded in 1999, the reserve’s conservation team oversaw the reintroduction of the first elephants, rhinos, buffalo, leopards, and lions to Cape Town in 250 yeas. Not only did Aquila reintroduce the first rhinos back to the Western Cape, but, in 2002, they became the first game reserve to successfully relocate elephants to the region. Although the cost of introducing two elephants into the reserve cost more than R2 million at the time, Aquila officially transitioned from a ‘Big 4’ safari to a ‘Big 5’ safari, making it the first Big 5 game reserve close to Cape Town. In 2024, 25 years after Aquila was founded, the elephants at the reserve have become one of the top attractions for guests to see on safari. Today, the Saving Private Rhino (SPR) organisation, the Animal Rescue Centre (ARC), the reserve’s ongoing efforts to protect the region’s endangered Cape Leopard population, and the ongoing goal of establishing the closest relative to the Cape Lion, are only small facets of our conservation initiatives. Cape Town Tourism Celebrates 25 Years of Cape Town Safaris Over the years, Aquila has evolved into a world-class safari destination, drawing visitors from across the globe. Its proximity to Cape Town, just a two-hour drive away, has made it especially popular among international tourists looking for a taste of the African bush without having to travel far from the city. Aquila offers an array of experiences, from day trips and luxury accommodation to guided game drives and conservation-focused tours. The reserve has also embraced eco-tourism by incorporating solar power and other sustainable practices into its operations. To honour the incredible impact Aquila Private Game Reserve has had on Cape Town and South Africa, Cape Town Tourism printed a special 2024/25 edition of their official visitor’ guide, featuring Aquila Safari’s on the front cover. This special edition cover, which shows two of Aquila’s lions, states: “Celebrating Aquila’s 25th Birthday, a proud partner of Cape Town Tourism.” Book Your Cape Town Safari From humble beginnings to a leading wildlife sanctuary, Aquila continues to play an important role as Cape Town’s very own Big Five safari destination.
