First Rhino Born at Aquila

27 February 2005 saw the first rhino born at the 4-star Aquila Private Game Reserve situated a mere 90 minutes drive on the N1 National Road from Cape Town. The expected time of the birth was around lunch time and the calf is in good health. Due to its mother’s protection; the sex or weight is not yet known.

The newborn has joined the existing herd – that were relocated in 2004 at a cost of over R1 million – and therefore create the largest breeding herd in the Western Cape. It is believed to be the first rhino born in the Cape in over two hundred years. In the future a healthy bloodline should be created from the new mix.

The Big 4 Reserve is home to rhinos, Cape Towns closest lion safari, leopard, buffalos, giraffes, black & blue wildebeests, burchell’s zebras, springboks, gemsboks, steenboks, karakals (lynx), blesboks, bat eared foxes, mountain leopards, crocodiles, ostriches, klip springers, duickers, greybucks, baboons, black backed jackels, hippos, elands & red hartebeests.

A staggering R25 million has recently been invested into Aquila in order to position the reserve as Cape Town’s ‘BIG 7 Destination’ alongside Table Mountain, Robben Island, Kirstenbosch, Cape Point etc.
